Succeed With Green Certification
Do you see yourself working in a role that will help to look after the planet? By training as a Domestic Green Engineer, you'll have the right skills for the job. Within months of getting started on a course, you could be ready to work here or overseas in a thriving new job or business. Oil and gas supplies are running out, and energy prices are prohibitive. We all know we should be lowering our carbon footprint. Governments are actively encouraging consumers to be more energy efficient and look towards alternative renewable sources of power.
Grants are available in the UK to replace inefficient boilers and utilise more 'green' forms of energy. This means there's an increasing amount of installation work for properly accredited professionals. And so if you're keen to learn how to be a plumber or an electrician, don't overlook the opportunities in the renewable energy market. If you've been in the industry for a while, check out the new courses and certifications in green engineering.

Naturally Replenishable Resources
Naturally renewable resources are being converted into usable energy because of developments in 'green' technology.
We can generate additional and efficient power supplies by utilising the sun, the tides and the wind. Clearly windmills have been in use for centuries, as have waterwheels - but neither are very practical for most domestic homes. Equipment that captures energy from the sun however can be perfect for most houses. This is leading to a lot of work for 'Green' electricians.
Solar Power
Domestic hot water pipes can be connected to solar water heaters to provide free heat to the system. Systems have been on sale in the UK for several decades, and the technology is now well understood. Although in Britain we can't rely entirely on them for all of our hot water needs, a typical family could expect to get most of their requirement in the summertime. Throughout a twelve month period, a system should be expected to deliver around half the total hot water requirement. The solar energy 'collectors' come as either lightweight evacuated tubes or slightly more robust flat panels. As might be expected, a south-facing roof is the ideal location for these collectors.
Photovoltaic cells or panels also absorb the sun's energy, but this time electricity is produced. Once again, the panels should be fitted to a south facing roof or wall, along with an inverter in the loft to convert the DC electric current to AC. The power distribution panel in the house will take the 'solar' electricity and use it in combination with that from the National Grid. Consumers will reduce their electricity bills significantly, as sunlight doesn't cost anything to run. Obviously savings will start to take effect once the initial cost of the system has been recovered. Anyone with a system that produces more electricity than the household consumes can automatically sell their excess to the national grid. To encourage more people to invest in solar PV systems, UK legislation has increased the amount energy companies have to pay for this fed-back electricity. Key factors that will impact the amount of electricity generated are the size of the system, the geographical location, the angle of the panels and any shading from buildings or trees etc.
Naturally Stored Heat
Geo-thermal energy is heat from the sun that's naturally stored in the earth. Plastic pipes are buried under the surface and filled with a soluble solution that won't damage the environment. The fluid becomes warm as it circulates inside the pipes and thus heat is transported to the pump. Homes with underfloor heating will notice the biggest benefits that heat pumps can bring. Heat pumps need a small amount of electricity to run them, but the savings by far outweigh the costs.
Green Engineering Training Courses
When you train to work in the green installations industry, you'll pick up a variety of worthwhile skills. As well as basic certification in domestic plumbing and electrical work, you'll cover legal requirements, health & safety plus how and where government funding can be applied. Most of the domestic interest in the renewables market is focused on solar thermal solutions and heat pumps. It makes commercial sense to concentrate on these. Courses in domestic green skills and qualifications are developing fast, to keep up with the increased demand caused by government incentives. If you have a special interest in water recycling, look for options that include rainwater and grey water harvesting.
A Step In The Right Direction
Every home being sold in the UK must now have an Energy Performance Certificate which states it's current consumption and advises on ways to become more efficient. Many assessments show huge savings could be made over a period of time if improved systems were installed. And up to 80 per cent of the cost of installation work can often be claimed from the government if owners have 'green' systems fitted by qualified professionals.
That just scratches the surface though. Within the next six years, all new homes must generate at least 15 percent of their energy from renewable sources to be legally compliant. Issues concerning climate change and rocketing fuel costs mean that green renewable energy is emerging as an excellent business for anyone with the right skills.
