Training As A Web Designer With A Home-Study Course
Can you think of any company that's thriving today that doesn't have a website of it's own? If a business wants to succeed, it must have a well designed and informative website. With one web address, a whole series of pages can act as a point of contact, a business promoter, a sales brochure, and a product educator. Very often when we're looking to buy something, the first thing we do is a product search on Google to find suppliers, make cost comparisons etc.
Growing Demand
Clearly when you have a growing number of web sites you need a growing number of designers as well. Perhaps this is something you'd like to get into.
If so, you can become trained in various different ways - from complete distance learning programmes at one extreme to a full 9 - 5 classroom experience at the other.
When you look at the range of trainers who are advertising, don't rush through them too quickly.
Consider how well you might get on with the different teaching deliveries. Take into account what else you've got going on in your life, and compare prices.
You should expect to learn a good cross-section of skills from your training programme. Before we go any further it may be worth pointing out the difference between a web designer and a web developer. Students training to become web developers will be taught programming codes, so they can learn how to create functions for the 'back office' of a website. We're concentrating here on the design side of the industry, for people who want to create attractive and innovative website pages.
Creative and Innovative
Web designers tend to be artistically talented and imaginative. Also people skills are a bonus, as frequent discussions with the client are common. Usually a client will have their own suggestions for the image their site should portray. You then have to bring those wishes to life, with an interesting, artistic and appropriate site that is easy for the user to find their way around. As the expert, the designer should be able to guide the client with respect to the features that are available to them for the price they want to pay.
Expert Training Programs...
Students are trained how to use a number of Adobe products on the majority of web design courses. Industry now recognises Adobe packages as the most commonly accepted ones the world over. Students can achieve various certifications. Study both Adobe Dreamweaver Creative Suite 4 and Adobe Flash Creative Suite 4 - they are two of the most useful products you could know. CS4, as it's known, is the latest version and is now standard, so avoid any companies still training in CS3. With professional Dreamweaver tools you'll be able to learn how to build fantastic and innovative web pages. Skills in Flash will bring those pages to life, with interactivity and animated movement. A web design student couldn't ask for two better packages to work with.
...And Professional Certifications
You should build a collection of your own showcase websites as you progress through your studies. Future employers will want to take a look at what you can do before offering you a position. If it's your intention to become a self-employed Web Designer, then commercial accreditations may be superfluous. If however you are looking to achieve professional status, ensure your training will lead to either Adobe Certified Expert (ACE), or Adobe Certified Professional (ACP).
Enhance Your Skills
Many students of Web Design limit their career opportunities by only learning about how to do the 'pretty bits' of a website. To have that competitive edge, you're advised to take on training that covers other disciplines as well as Dreamweaver and Flash. A certain knowledge of HTML and CSS will help to make your skills more well-rounded. Next, you should know about extended and dynamic HTML and PHP programming. Following on, a fully-fledged web designer should also be 'au fait' with the operations of an e commerce site. And then you should seek out training that covers an understanding of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation).
This is vital - as you'll learn how to optimise sites to enable them to become visible on the major Search Engines, and so of value to their owners. It doesn't matter how fabulous your websites are, they can't do the job they're designed for if nobody knows where they are.
Stunningly Stimulating!
There are a stunning amount of openings for talented and creative web designers. Why not get involved yourself by finding out about re-training opportunities today? Text and pictures on websites are starting to give way to animations and video - which will no doubt give way to full-screen presentations in 3 dimensions before long. Enjoy a worthwhile and progressive career by getting on board with this thrilling technological evolution.
